New Web Site for The Johnston Collection

We are delighted to announce that a web site dedicated to the images in the Johnston Collection has now gone live.  Following many months of digitisation by North Highland College staff and students, together with Wick Society Members, over 10,000 images have been digitised and are now available on the world wide web.  The project was devised and funded by JCIS to create a research source for students at Colleges and Universities.  We are pleased that it is now possible to make the images available to all who are interested in exploring  the Collection.

This is very much a ‘ work in progress’  and a challenge to anyone who can offer information and identification that will allow  the compilation of a full description of every image.  Very little information came to the Society  with the glass-plate negatives and many of the portraits only have the name of the person who commissioned the original photograph.  Each image has a ‘comment’ box that can be used to send suggestions, comments and new facts to The Wick Society team.

Many images are damaged but, using modern techniques, it is possible that some can be partly restored.  This will require considerable resources of time and finance, as will the  digitisation of the remaining 30,000 glass-plate negatives.

The Johnston Collection is proving to be an even greater  treasure store than was iimagined and the coming years will uncover much  more about the people, places and events that have given this part of Scotland its unique and special identity.  The project has revealed that the images cover the whole county of Caithness and encompass the rural life of the county as well as the better-known fishing and coastal scenes.

The Wick Society is indebted to Marc Farr and the team at North Highland College for proposing this project and for carrying it forward to this important moment. We can now open up the Johnston Collection to the widest possible audience.

Why not visit the new site at and start to explore!
